The historical building at 317 E. Sherman Ave. that most recently was The Cellar restaurant and beverage place will become The Honey Eatery and Social Club next week.

Owner Adam Hegsted plans to open Saturday and celebrate a grand opening Wednesday, June 6. “Honey” is in the name as it reflects nature in North Idaho.

He describes the Honey Eatery as modern, fun and approachable with breakfast and lunch entrees including an Inland Northwest Eggs Benedict with trout and mushrooms, sourdough honey waffles, avocado toast, honey Caesar salad, cedar-cooked Idaho trout, honey-cured pork ribs, a burrata omelet and coffee from the Roast House.

With various types of seating for about 75 people, Honey Eatery will be open 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. The eclectic-artistic decor retains the building’s historical look. An upper mezzanine can be used for private gatherings of 20 to 30 people. Beer, wine and brunch-style cocktails are offered.

With richer colors, a stage with lighting and sound and an expanded bar, the Honey Social Club downstairs will seat about 80 people with chairs, soft seating and furniture. Live music and ticketed concert events will be offered.

The restaurant will feature small plates with local products, craft cocktails, beer and a self-service wine bar with card-purchased pours. Hours will be 4 p.m. to midnight Wednesday to Sunday. It will host a monthly beer and wine club.

Hegsted owns or is a partner in Incrediburger & Eggs (one in Spokane and one to be built in Coeur d’Alene), Wandering Table, Yards Bruncheon and Gilded Unicorn in Spokane, Farmhouse Kitchen & Silo Bar in Pondreay, Eat Good Cafe in Liberty Lake, Republic Kitchen & Taphouse in Post Falls and Le Catering.

The historic 317 E. Sherman building

Evidently built in 1915, the building with the Honey Eatery and Honey Social Club described above evidently started as a downtown grocery store.

It was North Idaho’s first J.C. Penney store from 1928 to 1964, was vacant from 1967 to 1970 and became Rusan’s Women’s Clothing store.

Mariposa Women’s Clothing was there from 1981 to 1989, and it was Great Escapes Sporting Goods from 1990 to 2000. It later became The Cellar.

Thanks to Dorothy Dahlgren of the Museum of North Idaho for helping with this information.

Hitches Unlimited moves to Seltice

Now in a bigger facility, Hitches Unlimited has moved from 1303 E. Sherman Ave. to 3127 W. Seltice Way.

The company offers trailer repair, goose-neck fifth-wheel hitches, wiring, hitches, weight-distribution bearings, flat tow setups, tow bars, hydra lifts, custom rear trailer hitches and lights, truck and UTV accessories.

Kevin Dorman started the business in 1990, and after he died Andrew Freitas took over. Brian Bartlett is lead installer.

And now the Tidbits

- Tim’s Special Cut Meats will be moving from Government Way to Post Falls. The former Herbie’s eatery in Fairgrounds Center will become a tea place.

- Watch for changes at 421 E. Lakeside downtown. It will become office suites and a coffee-food place with seating in the front yard.

- Watch for a move by Tiffany Blue downtown and a new business coming into the old location. A sushi eatery may be coming into 221 E. Sherman.

- A Thai Express eatery will open near Mod Pizza in Crossroads Center at Appleway and Ramsey.

- Great Harvest is closed near Costco, and the Fedora Restaurant is closed on Kathleen. Both will evidently reopen with new owners. Anyone have info on those?

- A new Fu-Ki Japanese Steakhouse is under construction where the Kynrede Cafe was at 8885 N. Government Way in Hayden. And a new Human Bean coffee place is under construction behind ICCU in Hayden.

- Watch for a new Beau Monde Exchange and a Domino’s Pizza in Post Falls.

- New places coming in Riverbend Commerce Park (west side of Post Falls) include Cloud Vapor, Shooters Supply and Two Knights Home Brew.

- Incrediburger & Eggs will build a new place next to Firehouse Subs on Appleway. And Thomas Hammer Coffee will join the Firehouse Subs building. Idaho Central Credit Union will be across the street.

- New places downtown will be Live For Blu fine art at 505 E. Sherman and The NYC Piano Bar at 313 E. Sherman.

- Ellenbecker Eye Clinic will move this summer from 2140 Riverstone Drive to nearby 2020.

- Hotel news: The Shilo Inn is being remodeled on Appleway and will become a Comfort Suites and Mainstay Suites with 138 rooms, an indoor pool and a meeting room for 50 people. Staybridge Suites hotel is under construction in Riverstone.

- Last week’s historical information on Camera Corral was incorrect. Darwin Wastweet started the company on Fourth Street in 1976 and in 1981 sold it to David “Duke” Riglin and Tyke VanDellon, who moved it to Sherman Avenue.

- From the Associated Press Stylebook of 2018: Preferred spellings are “adviser,” “OK” and “judgment.” Notice that punctuation goes inside quote marks. For some reason the clues on the TV show “Jeopardy” are always written wrong.
