CLEAR-CUT: A neighbor's lament

| May 23, 2018 1:00 AM

Perhaps you have seen the repugnant scar on the south side of Hayden Lake. High up on 50-60 degree slopes, it is a disgustingly obscene scab upon an otherwise tranquil mountain side of evergreen pines, firs and cedars. It consists of a 60-plus acre clear-cut of these trees.

If you are unfortunate enough to live below or bordering this calamitous scar, your once peaceful backyard will now be subject to horrendous erosion from rains or winter snows, not to mention the dust and smoke from the burning of any refuse that will not make a dollar.

How you might ask, was this allowed to take place? The owner, not the least bit morally concerned with this travesty, but giddy with dollar signs, was able to obtain a permit from our devoted Bureau of Lands. With permit in hand the clear cutting of trees became legally possible. According to questions presented, it has been alleged that these trees were diseased and needed to be destroyed. What a crock. The owner will have three years to replant with 6-10 inch seedlings.

It was legally permissible but morally questionable to allow such a travesty to the beauty of Hayden Lake. The possibility of erosion affecting Hayden Lake itself, not to mention the bordering neighbors, should present an enticing prospect for interested lawyers.
