CHUBBUCK — With two at-bats remaining, Lake City was unable to rally from a four-run deficit, and was elimininated by a 5-1 loss to Rocky Mountain of Meridian on Saturday morning at the state 5A softball tournament at Capell Park.

The game was suspended Friday night due to rain and lightning with the Timberwolves trailing 5-1 and coming to bat in the bottom of the sixth.

Lake City, last year’s state runners-up which went 1-2 and tied for fifth in the tourney, finished 21-6.

Ashlyn Allen went 3 for 3 for Lake City.

Rocky went on to lose 5-4 to Mountain View of Meridian and finished fourth. Boise beat Eagle 6-5 in eight innings in the championship game. Mountain View was third.

It was the third straight year Lake City was interrupted by rain at state. Two years ago, after the Timberwolves lost on the first day, rain caused organizers to cancel the losers bracket, sending Lake City home without a chance to play its way back into the championship round.

“Although this state tournament did not go as planned, I would like to thank the IHSAA for allowing us to finish the rain delayed/suspended game to completion,” fourth-year Lake City coach Jesse Lenz said. “I would also like to thank my athletic director, Jim Winger, for fighting for my team, and especially my seniors, to end their season the right way and not by the rain. Lastly, I would like to thank my seniors for their hard work and dedication to Lake City softball. It is hard to believe this is my first group of players we have seen through our program, and we know they are going to be successful at whatever they choose to do.”
