Golden trio

BOISE — Keara Simpson came oh-so-close to winning the state discus title last season.

Try second place by an inch.

Simpson improved her standing by one important place this time around as the Lake City High senior won the 5A girls discus crown at the 5A/4A state track and field meet at Dona Larsen Park on Saturday.

Simpson’s winning toss was 134 feet, 9 inches, nearly five feet better than the runner-up as she was one of three area athletes to win a state title on the second and final day of the meet.

Post Falls junior Tyler Trengove earned his second state title in two days by winning the 5A boys long jump at 6 feet, 8 inches, while Coeur d’Alene senior Matt Ward won the 5A boys discus in 161 feet, 5 inches.

Post Falls senior star Melody Kempton came up short of her attempt to win a fourth consecutive state 5A girls high jump title. Kempton finished second at 5-6, behind Mountain View of Meridian senior Tori Sloan (5-8).

Simpson’s victory in the discus helped Lake City (43 points) finish fifth in the 5A girls team category. Mountain View won with 134 points and Rocky Mountain (96) of Meridian was second.

Post Falls (35) finished in a tie for 10th in the 5A boys team competition, primarily due to Trengove’s exploits. Rocky Mountain (101) finished first and Mountain View (95.5) was second.

Simpson overcame a rocky start to win the discus, an event in which five of the top seven finishers were from the Coeur d’Alene area.

Coeur d’Alene sophomore Emily Bronson was second with a toss of 130-10 and Lake City sophomore Lizzy Wensley was third at 125-6. Coeur d’Alene sophomore Kaitlyn Ward (123-1) finished fifth and Lake City junior Sierra Parson (117-11) just missed a medal by placing seventh.

Simpson scratched her first attempt and followed with throws around 101 and 109 feet and experienced an anxious moment before learning she had advanced to the finals.

“I thought I was done there and then got told that I made it in,” said Simpson, who has signed to play basketball at North Idaho College. “They were like, ‘Pressure is off. You’re in ninth now. Just throw it.’ I was like, ‘OK, I guess.’”

Simpson unleashed her winning toss and survived a strong throw from Bronson to win that elusive title. As a junior, Simpson’s toss of 134-11 was one inch behind winner Randee Smith of Rigby.

“I’ve never come in as a first seed all four years of high school so it was kind of no pressure because I was the underdog,” Simpson said of her state title. “Last year getting second, this season I definitely wanted to get first.

“I just think it is a lot on your mind, a lot of pressure. It is how you handle it. At the beginning, I didn’t handle it very well. I kind of changed that.”

Simpson joked that a change in gum might have helped. Her throws coach, Bart Templeman of Iron Wood Throwers Camp, gave her bubble gum instead of her preferred Trident.

Templeman also has been influential in the development of Ward, who won the discus by nearly 6 feet. Timberline sophomore Kade McCall was second at 155-7 and Lake City junior Jacob Smith was third at 152-6.

“I definitely put a lot of work and effort into this,” Ward said.

Ward has found Templeman’s facility in Rathdrum to be the perfect tonic for developing his craft.

“It’s basically just a thrower’s building and it has an indoor throwing (area),” Ward said. “Been practicing all year round. It really makes a difference.”

Ward’s crown made it two straight discus state titles for Coeur d’Alene. Ward’s former teammate, Grady Leonard, won the event last year.

Trengove followed up Friday’s long jump title by winning the high jump on Saturday morning and immediately reporting to the triple jump for that competition.

His mark in the triple jump (43-10 1/4) was less than two inches shy of the winning jump recorded by Capital of Boise senior Jeff Mickelson (44-0).

“I wanted to win all three (events) but you can’t win them all all the time,” Trengove said.

Trengove said he didn’t expect to win the high jump after he got off to a shaky start. But he recovered from two scratches and persevered before becoming the last person standing.

Now he will return for his senior season as the state champion in two events and a runner-up in another.

“I was happy,” Trengove said. “I did a lot better than last year.”

Meanwhile, Kempton was aware she was facing more of a challenge this year and Sloan was as good as advertised in claiming the high jump crown.

“Today was a little frustrating,” Kempton said. “I wanted to get one more but she’s an amazing jumper. If I was going to lose to anyone, I’d want it to be her. She’s awesome and she went out and won it today. I respect her for that.”

Kempton knew she was in trouble when she missed her first attempt at 5-8. Sloan had already nailed her jump at that height. Two more missed attempts by Kempton ended her reign of state titles at three.

“Right now, I’m still kind of sad that I didn’t win the last one,” said Kempton, the Gatorade Idaho Player of the Year who has signed to play basketball at Gonzaga. “But I know when I look back I will be super proud of myself and really appreciate the accomplishment of what I have done for my career.”

Also, Coeur d’Alene junior Nate Burch finished second in 5A 110 hurdles with a time of 14.34 seconds. Rocky Mountain senior Zach Meyer (14.22) won the event. Burch broke the school record set by Don Leonard in 1983.

Bishop Kelly won both the boys and girls 4A team crowns. The Knights edged Twin Falls 85.5 to 80.5 in the boys competition and also outlasted Twin Falls (113 to 95) in the girls derby.

Other area athletes or relay teams that medaled include:

Lake City girls — junior Klaire Mitchell placed fourth in the 100 hurdles in 15.51 seconds, and freshman Angelyca Chapman finished fourth in the 400 in 59.62 seconds. Also, the 4x200 relay team finished fifth in 1:44.70.

Coeur d’Alene girls — senior Brooke McClurkin finished third (45.90 seconds) in the 300 hurdles. Also, the 4x400 relay team placed fourth in 4:00.40.

Lakeland girls — senior Jillian Mael finished fourth (25.81) in the 200, and freshman Sydnee Hostetler placed sixth (2:23.44) in the 800 (2:23.44). Also, Lakeland placed fifth in the 4x200 relay in 1:46.42.

Sandpoint girls — senior Hannah Davidson finished third (2:19.46) in the 800, third (5:13.58) in the 1,600 and fifth (9-6) in the pole vault.

Sandpoint boys — senior T.J. Davis placed fifth in the 300 hurdles in 41.3 seconds. Davis was disqualified in the 110 hurdles after hitting the next-to-last hurdle while holding a slim lead. Sandpoint also placed sixth in the 4x100 relay with a time of 44.17 seconds.
