Robert Duane Nordby, 89

Robert Duane Nordby, 89, passed away on May 10, 2018 at home with his faithful dog, Snowdog, at his side. He was born April 26, 1929, in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, to Theodore Olvas Nordby and Frances Lela Nordby. He grew up in Dover, Idaho, graduated from Sandpoint High School in 1946, and enlisted in the U.S. Army on Nov. 26, 1946. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War.

He met his future wife, Mary Alice Griggs, while stationed in Okinawa, Japan, and they married on May 14, 1953. After they were both discharged from the U.S. Army, they moved to Sandpoint, Idaho, where they made their home. He worked for the railroad and Albertsons, until they moved to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho in 1956. He then went to work for Coca-Cola and later for the Rutledge Potlatch Corporation, where he took early retirement in 1988.

Robert loved to fish, play cards, golf, camp and visit with anyone. He loved being a snowbird and made many longtime friends from his adventures in Yuma, Ariz.

He was a past President of the Coeur d’Alene Eagles and also past President for Idaho State. The Eagles was a very important part of his life. He was also a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, of which he still attended. He also participated for many years in Relay For Life and he was a two-time cancer survivor and he volunteered his time, after the death of his wife, Mary, at the North Idaho Cancer Center.

He is survived by daughter, Sandra (Dale) Motz of Post Falls, Idaho, son, David Nordby of Post Falls, and daughter, Sharon (Dennis) Nelson of Eagle Point, Ore. He is also survived by sister, Ruth Brown of Meridian, Idaho; brother, Truman (Lauraine) Nordby Morgan Hill, Calif.; brother, Stan Nordby of Meridian; brother-in-law, Bob Clawson of The Dalles, Ore.; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and 11 nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 49 years, Mary Alice Nordby; sister, Mona Clawson; sister, Linda McIntosh and husband, Tom McIntosh; and his brother-in-law, Ken Brown.

Donations may be made to Relay for Life of Kootenai County.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, 2018, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 812 N. Fifth St., Coeur d’Alene, Idaho 83814. Reception to follow.
