Trengove makes quite the jump

BOISE — Post Falls junior Tyler Trengove knew he was one jump away from being a state champion but he was sending off bad vibes.

He was beating himself up mentally and jumps coach Marc Allert noticed. He simply told Trengove to relax.

The advice was soothing to Trengove and what ensued was the winning leap of 22 feet, 6 1/2 inches as he won 5A state long jump title during Friday’s first day of the 5A/4A track and field meet at Dona Larsen Park.

Trengove was the lone local athlete to win a state crown on the opening day.

Lakeland sophomore Summer Kastning came close by placing second in the 4A girls high jump at 5-2. Idaho Falls senior Katie Montgomery (5-4) won the event.

Trengove earned his medal with a solid showing that also featured some adversity at the start when he scratched on his first jump. But all that was forgotten after he delivered the decisive jump to win the event. Rigby senior Hunter Jensen was second at 22-1 1/2.

“It was really impressive that he was able to hang in there and win it on his last jump,” Post Falls coach Wade Quesnell said. “He made a great jump under pressure.”

Trengove was well aware of what was at stake as he lined up for the jump.

“I just knew that right then and there I had to throw out a big jump, otherwise I wouldn’t have gotten first,” Trengove said.

But before he could jump, he had to get his mental game in order after those timely words from Allert.

“I was being hard on myself because I wasn’t jumping to the best of my ability,” Trengove explained.

A short time later, he was staring at his state championship medal as he walked from the stadium to his nearby hotel room. He put it on the table, laid down on the bed and repeatedly glanced at the memento.

Last year, Trengove finished seventh in the long jump, one place from medaling.

Trengove competes in the high jump and triple jump finals today as he attempts to become a multiple state champion. He said he is hoping to break the school triple jump record of 45 feet, seven inches.

But it is already a good weekend as he possesses a medal in his least favorite of the three events.

“I enjoy doing long jump the least because I just feel it requires less skill,” Trengove said.

Quesnell won’t be the least bit surprised if Trengove earns another state crown or two today.

“I really had faith that he could not only win the long jump, but also the high jump,” Quesnell said. “He can triple jump so well, I wouldn’t count him out of the triple.”

Meanwhile, defending girls 5A shot put state champion Emily Hernandez of Lake City was unable to defend her crown. The senior finished third with a toss of 40-6 as Rigby junior Mateya Mobley (41-10 1/2) won the event and Borah senior Madeline Geritz (41-8) was second.

Lake City senior Keara Simpson placed fifth (36-11 1/2) and Coeur d’Alene junior Carmen Breen was sixth (35-3 1/2).

Post Falls senior Mackenzie Morris finished fourth in the 5A girls pole vault with a leap of 11-6.

Coeur d’Alene junior Travis Kerr placed sixth in the 5A boys shot put with a throw of 47-5 1/2.

Coeur d’Alene junior Nate Burch posted the top prelims time (14.23 seconds) in the 5A boys 110 hurdles.

Post Falls senior Melody Kempton will seek her fourth straight 5A girls high jump title today.
