Lake City battling rain again at state

| May 19, 2018 1:00 AM

CHUBBUCK — For the third straight year, Lake City ran into rain issues at the state softball tournament.

But at least this year, the Timberwolves are still playing after the first day.

So far.

Lake City’s third game of the day on Friday, vs. Rocky Mountain of Meridian, was called due to lightning and then rain with Rocky leading 5-1, and Lake City coming to bat in the bottom of the sixth.

The game is scheduled to be resumed today at 8:30 a.m. PDT — that’s if the fields at Capell Park are ready by then. If not, the game could be moved elsewhere, possibly to Blackfoot.

Two years ago, Lake City lost on the first day of state, then was unable to work its way back when the losers bracket was canceled.

Last year, when the tournament was played in Coeur d’Alene, rain washed out Saturday’s schedule, pushing the tourney to a Sunday finish for the second straight year, where Lake City finished second to Eagle.

In the first game Friday, Riley McGrath hit a three-run home run in the top of the eighth for Mountain View. Lake City scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning before coming up short.

“That first game was an absolute battle,” Lake City coach Jesse Lenz said. “We ran up against a Mountain View team that put us in some tough situations. We just couldn’t overcome the three-run homer in the top of the eighth. “But the girls battled; we had runners on but couldn’t get the key hit in sixth, seventh and eighth.”

Haley Loffer went 5 for 5 with a triple and two doubles, and drove in a pair of runs for Lake City (21-5). Emma Gray was 3 for 3 and drove in four runs, two on a fifth-inning double that put the Timberwolves up 4-2.

Against Highland (16-14), Abby Jankay went 2 for 4 with three RBIs, and Olivia Zufelt hit a solo homer for the Timberwolves. Reilley Chapman hit a two-run double in the fifth inning, and finished 2 for 4 and scored twice.
