Coeur d'Alene boys finish second at state

LEWISTON — Normally, a runner-up finish at state is cause for disappointment.
But Coeur d’Alene High golf coach Bryan Duncan was thrilled after the Vikings finished second at the state 5A tournament Tuesday at the Lewiston Country Club.
Coeur d’Alene shot 306 each day of the two-day tournament, 22 strokes ahead of third-place Boise.
“I was real proud of our kids; those were our two best scores of the year,” Duncan said.
Rocky Mountain of Meridian, with three Division 1 signees and a fourth who has verbally committed, won its third straight team title with a 578. The Grizzlies shot 279 on Tuesday, 20 strokes better than on Monday, when they led Coeur d’Alene by only seven shots.
“I knew it would take a miracle on our behalf,” Duncan said.
Coeur d’Alene junior Brayden Ogle finished third overall with a two-over-par 146. Teammate Jackson Davenport, also a junior, finished 10th after shooting 153. The top 10 individuals earn medals.
“Proud of Brayden, proud of Jackson,” Duncan said.
Duncan was delighted with the play of junior Sam Johnson, who followed up an 84 on Monday with a 73 on Tuesday.
“He was real upset yesterday,” Duncan said. “That’s why we play five and score four.”
Coeur d’Alene brought home its 10th state trophy under Duncan, who took over as Viking coach in 2005.
The Vikings will return three juniors and a freshman from this year’s state team; Austin Mitchell is the lone senior.
“We’re really happy with our future,” said Duncan, noting some eighth-graders could challenge for varsity spots next spring. “Maybe we could be a Rocky of the future.”
Carson Barry of Rocky Mountain, who has signed with Oregon State, shot 64 on Tuesday and won the individual title with a 136. First-day leader Sam Tidd of Rocky Mountain, who has signed with Oklahoma, finished at 141.
Post Falls senior Cameron Flores shot 151 and finished eighth. The Trojans came in sixth with a 653, eight strokes back of fourth-place Mountain View of Meridian. The top four teams earned trophies.
Ryan Chapman, Lake City’s lone entrant, shot 80 on Tuesday and finished at 161.
“I’m proud of the way that Ryan represented us at state,” Lake City boys coach Troy Anderson said. “He had some unfortunate breaks, but competed well.”
In the girls tournament, sophomore Kyla Currie of Lake City shot 83-84—167 and finished seventh. Lake City finished sixth. Eagle shot 670 and won by 25 strokes over Boise.
“I am really proud of the girls and the season they had,” Lake City girls coach Corey Owen said. “They battled very hard over two days on a challenging course to finish sixth in the state. We ran into some very good teams from down south this weekend and they just flat outplayed us. Kyla Currie really had a good weekend to finish seventh in the state. Kyla showed a lot of poise and ability to hang in there with an incredibly talented field. She has a lot of potential moving forward because with her talent and work ethic I expect big more big things out of her the next two years.”

home trophy with fourth
BLANCHARD — Madeline Neff, who has signed with North Idaho College, finished with a 175 for 10th place in the state 4A girls tournament at StoneRidge Golf Course.
Lakeland’s girls brought home a trophy, finishing fourth with a 788.
Twin Falls swept the boys and girls team titles, winning the boys tournament by one stroke over Bishop Kelly. Twin Falls’ girls won by 109 strokes with a 652.

Kellogg boys
repeat as state champs
TWIN LAKES — With four players placing in the top eight, Kellogg’s boys repeated as state 3A champions at Twin Lakes Village.
The Wildcats shot 653, finishing 14 strokes ahead of Fruitland. Fruitland led Kellogg by one shot following Monday’s first round.
Chase Jerome of Kellogg finished third, Tyler Gibbons sixth, Taylor Bush seventh and Cade Finlay eighth.
All five Wildcats were members of last year’s state title team.
Kellogg’s girls placed third, led by Kat Rauenhorst, who finished third. Kellogg shot 823. Defending champion Buhl shot 759 and won by 17 strokes.
Timberlake finished fifth, led by Lilly Kelley, who tied for ninth.
