ADLER: Responsibility key

| May 16, 2018 1:00 AM

Friday’s paper had a front-page headline “Free press = free country.” I would suggest it should have been “RESPONSIBLE Free press = free country.” It seems obvious to me that nearly all “reporting” has become more like commentaries promoting an agenda of some sort, whether overtly stated or by snide remarks indicating an opinion.

Speaker Adler’s presentation was titled “Fake News and Freedom of the Press” and his comments about the press being attacked vehemently the last two years — obviously aimed at President Trump’s “fake news” comments (most of which have been right on, incidentally) — clearly show his bias. The “commentary” vs. “reporting” problem is much more than two years old. Finally someone is calling a spade a spade. I guess I just exposed my bias!

The title of the article next to his on the front page was “Restoring voter trust key for Democrats.” That same thought could also be applied to so much of the press… seems to me most folks don’t trust it to be objective anymore.
