Coeur d'Alene boys have strong start at state golf tournament

| May 15, 2018 1:07 AM

LEWISTON — A season-best team score of 306 has the Coeur d’Alene boys golf team in second place after the first day of the two-day state 5A golf tournament at Lewiston Country Club.

Brayden Ogle’s 72 led four Viking golfers who shot in the 70s on Monday, and put Ogle tied for second among the top 10 individuals.

“That was our best score of the year, and we picked a great time to do it,” CHS golf coach Bryan Duncan said. “I’ve often said you can’t win a title on the first day of the state tournament, but you can certainly lose it. I’m very pleased with how we played.”

Two-time defending boys champion Rocky Mountain of Meridian seems on its way to another title, with Sam Tidd (66) and Carson Barry (72) leading Rocky to a first-place score on Monday.

“Rocky Mountain is in a class by themselves — they might be among the top teams in the nation,” Duncan said.

Cameron Flores and Tanner Helms each shot a 76 for Post Falls, placing them tied for eighth among individuals.

A complete list of team scores was not provided by tournament officials.

Lake City’s girls are sixth after shooting 384 on the first day. Eagle shot 337 and leads by 15 strokes. Kyla Currie of Lake City is tied for fourth among individuals after shooting 83.

“Kyla had a terrific day,” Lake City girls coach Corey Owen said. “The rest of the girls felt like they left quite a few strokes on the course so hopefully we can come back tomorrow and reel in a few of those teams ahead of us.”
