LEWISTON — They didn’t quite need that late magic for a third time this week, but the run of the Post Falls baseball team continues.

Jake Pfennigs, who has signed with Oregon State, struck out 10 in a complete game two-hitter as the Trojans held off the Borah Lions of Boise 1-0 in a state 5A play-in game Saturday at Church Field.

Post Falls (15-11) advances to the program’s first state 5A tournament starting on Thursday at Borah High. The Trojans open against defending champion Rocky Mountain (22-4) of Meridian at 3:30 p.m. PDT.

It’s the first time Post Falls has qualified for state since 2006, when the Trojans were in 4A.

“Jake really kept them off balance and they didn’t get a lot of good swings against him,” Post Falls coach Mick Zeller said. “It was huge. We played really good defense behind him.”

Earlier this week, Post Falls beat Coeur d’Alene 3-2 on Monday, lost to Lewiston 9-8 on Tuesday in the regional championship game, and beat Coeur d’Alene again 3-2 in 11 innings Thursday in a loser-out game to advance to the play-in game.

“Last week, with the four one-run ballgames in five days, it’s a little tough on the heart,” Zeller said.

Nate Buer tripled to score Matt Fleming with the lone run of the game with one out in the top of the third inning for Post Falls.

Borah finishes 17-12-1.
