Livingston, Slaveck lead Sandpoint girls to 4A regional title

SANDPOINT — Friends and teammates Allura Livingston and Jenny Slaveck faced off in the finals of girls singles, with Livingston winning in three sets, but both would eventually punch their tickets to state, leading the Bulldog girls to the 4A Region 1 tennis championship on Saturday at Travers Park.

Slaveck bounced back to defeat teammate Alana Seifert in straight sets to earn the second spot to state, and April and Amy Clark bounced back from a finals defeat and played some of their best tennis of the season to punch their ticket in girls doubles, part of a strong showing by the Bulldog girls team.

“Allura defeated Jenny in the battle we all expected, losing the first set and coming back with a vengeance winning the last two. Allura is just so tough,” said Bulldog head coach Kent Anderson. “Jenny beat Alana to qualify for state in the war of attrition. Alana was playing her third match of the day while Jenny was still recovering from a medical timeout for heat exhaustion. Most people don’t understand how grueling four or five hours of tennis can be at these temperatures. I’ve never been so proud of my team.”

Lakeland had two boys doubles teams facing off with a state berth on the line, and in the end, David Durfee and Cody Wilding were able to grind out a 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 in the consolation finals, the lone Hawks to qualify for state.

Lakeland’s Jorge Bonacho worked hard to earn a three-set win over Sandpoint’s Declan Plummer in the consolation semis, before running out of gas in the championship and falling in straight sets to Moscow’s No. 2.

Sandpoint’s Tessa Beeman and Noah Hastings lost a tough three-setter in mixed doubles to fall one match short of state.

The state tennis tournament is Friday and Saturday in Boise.
