Lake City boys shine on first day

COEUR d’ALENE — Top-seeded Jack DuCoeur did not drop a game in advancing to the boys singles championship match at the 5A Region 1 tennis tournament Friday.

Singles matches were held at Coeur d’Alene High, doubles matches at Lake City High.

DuCoeur won a pair of 6-0, 6-0 matches, and will face teammate Chris Vargas in the finals. In his semifinal, Vargas outlasted Austin Gomez of Lewiston 7-6 (5), 6-3 in the final singles match of the day.

In girls singles, the top two seeds were upset in the semifinals. Both are returning state participants, competing for one berth to state left in the consolation bracket.

In girls doubles the top seed lost in the semifinals and the No. 2 seed lost in the quarterfinals, and they’ll meet in a loser-out match this morning.

The top seeds advanced to the finals in boys doubles and in mixed doubles. Top-seeded Kim Gunnerson and Bailey Throm of Coeur d’Alene were also undefeated in league play.

The top three placers in each division advance to state next weekend in Boise.

The tournament concludes today with all matches at Coeur d’Alene High, beginning at 9:30 a.m. with consolation matches. Championship matches will follow, sometime around 1 or 2 p.m.
