CULDESAC — A Coeur d’Alene man suffered serious injuries in an accident on U.S. 95 near Culdesac on Friday afternoon, the Idaho State Police reported.

Steven Eckhart, 31, of Coeur d’Alene was transported by Life Flight to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston, then flown to Sacred Heart in Spokane due to the severity of his injuries, police reported. His condition was not available late Friday.

Police reported that Eckhart was northbound on U.S. 95 near Culdesac, southeast of Lewiston, at 1:38 p.m., pulling a boat with his 1997 Ford F150. It went off the northbound lane of the highway and struck a small embankment leading up to Chambers Road, causing the pickup truck to go airborne.

A 2009 Dodge Caliber driven by Brenda Tannahill, 50, of Culdesac, was traveling east on Chambers and was stopped at the stop sign at U.S. 95. Police said the passenger side of the Ford, as it was airborne, struck the driver’s side of the Dodge before the truck rolled over the top of the car, causing severe damage to both vehicles.

The trailer and boat being pulled by the Ford became detached from the truck and crashed off the roadway, just north of Chambers Road, police reported. Both the Ford and the Dodge came to rest in the southbound lane of U.S. 95.

Eckhart was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the Ford, police reported, while Tannahill was wearing a seat belt.

U.S. 95 was blocked for about two hours after the crash, which remains under investigation.
