Joyce Lavern Joki, 83

Joyce Lavern Joki, 83, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, passed away peacefully Sunday, May 6, 2018, at Schneidmiller Hospice House in Coeur d’Alene, with her loving family by her side. Joyce was born to Marvin and Bea (Rogers) Blankenship, April 11, 1935, in Mauldin, Ark.

When she was little, they moved to St. Maries, Idaho. She graduated from St. Maries High School in 1953 and after high school, she married Donald Spooner. Together they had two children, Rick and Stephanie. After a tragic logging accident that took Donald’s life, she moved to Coeur d’Alene. It was there that she met Phillip Joki. They married in November 1966. In 1967, they were blessed with another daughter, Lisa.

Joyce was a stay-at-home mom and did a very good job taking care of us. She also worked with Phil for Joki Logging and made many a trip up and down the Coeur d’Alene River Road, going back and forth to the IFI Mill. Joyce and Phil lived many years at Babins Campground, where they made many good friends with many great times had by all of us. Mom was a great cook, especially her apple pie and her Coney Island sauce. Joyce was a huge Gonzaga men’s basketball and Seahawks fan and she loved her gambling trips with Dad and their good friends. She bowled on numerous leagues and in many tournaments, which usually included her brother, Denny Blankenship and daughters, Lisa and Stephanie.

Phil and Joyce were longtime members of the Hayden Lake Eagles. Mom’s greatest pride and joy were her grandsons. Mom’s favorite holiday was Christmas and she made the best cookies and made sure everyone got a platter, and of course her children and grandchildren were spoiled rotten. We will miss her everyday and life will never be the same. We love you more than words can say.

She is survived by her son, Rick Spooner; daughters Stephanie Spooner Bogar and Lisa (Bill) Brooks; grandsons Nick and Tanner Bogar, and Derek Brooks, all of Coeur d’Alene; brother Denny (Brenda) Blankenship of Kellogg, Idaho; and numerous nephews, cousins and good friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, Phil of 46 years; parents Marvin and Bea Blankenship; her brother, Danny Blankenship; numerous aunts, uncles and many close friends.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 17, 2018, at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens, 7315 N. Government Way, Coeur d’Alene. A celebration of her life will follow at the Hayden Lake Eagles Lodge, 1520 W. Wyoming Ave., Hayden, Idaho.

We would like to thank the nurses and staff at the Schneidmiller Hospice House for taking such good care of our mom and all of us. Donations in her memory may be made to the Schneidmiller Hospice House in care of North Idaho Hospice, 2290 W. Prairie Ave., Coeur d’Alene, ID 83814.
