St. Maries gets the win it needs for district title

| May 11, 2018 1:00 AM

OROFINO — St. Maries bounced back from its first loss of the season in Game 2 to beat Orofino 14-7 in the deciding game of the best-of-3 series for the 2A District 1-2 championship Thursday.

Kaylee Auer homered and drove in four runs in Game 3 for St. Maries (15-1), which fell to Orofino 13-7 earlier Thursday.

St. Maries had beaten the Maniacs all three times during Central Idaho League play, then eked out an 18-17 win in Game 1 of the championship series Wednesday.

“We knew they were going to be tough to beat a fifth time; you don’t go to state on your record alone,” St. Maries coach Todd Bitterman said. “That got us our goal, which was to get south.”

St. Maries advances to state May 18-19 at Pocatello High. The Lumberjacks open May 18 at 8 a.m. PDT vs. the second-place finisher from District 5.

Orofino finished 9-10.

Lakeland (10-14) will host Sandpoint (9-9) in the championship game needing to beat the Bulldogs twice to advance to the state 4A tournament starting next Friday at Blackfoot High.

“It was good to get three different players some time on the mound,” said Lakeland coach Colleen Bevacqua, who threw Taylor Woolley, Ashtyn Howerton and Alicia Edelblute. “Taylor, she’s definitely the go-to pitcher, but both Alicia and Ashtyn pitched really well. We got into a little bit of trouble, but Taylor got us out of it. I’m proud of my team for getting the bats going.”
