COEUR d'ALENE β€” As Judy Kennedy watched in the mirror how her hair was taking shape, she reflected on what the pampering meant to her.

"It's wonderful to be waited on," said Kennedy, one of 13 Garden Plaza of Post Falls senior residents treated with courtesy blow-dry styles and manicures on Thursday at the Tony & Guy Hairdressing Academy just in time for Mother's Day Weekend.

Interaction between the young students and their senior customers was as much of a treat as the curls of care.

Student Kayelee Pangallo said she was thrilled to meet Kennedy.

β€œIt’s nice to get pampered," Pangallo said. "Self care isn't selfish. It's awesome to give back to these residents, but she's already beautiful."

Kennedy appeared to blush a bit in response.

"You're so sweet," Kennedy told Pangallo. "You've made my day."

Wendy Lebsack, activities director for Garden Plaza, said the seniors hopped aboard the "beauty bus" and went to Coeur d'Alene for their new looks.

"It's been a fun day, and I wanted to do something different for them other than a Mother's Day tea," she said. "This makes them feel extra special, and they deserve it."

Dolores Hodge was all smiles as she was treated by student Hattie Hudson.

"I wanted to look better, and she's doing it," Hodge said with a smile. "It's nice to have the attention. It makes you feel special."

Hodge said she believes her hairstyle will last awhile "as long as I'm staying out of the rain and wind." She said her daughter is a cosmetologist and cuts her hair but it's still been "awhile" since she had her hair styled.

Hodge and Hudson hit it off, conversing about how their parents met and finding similarities in their stories.

"I've always enjoyed older ladies β€” they have some great advice," Hudson said. "My dad tells me that I'm an old soul, and I'm named after my great-grandma. My parents met through her."

Sandy Chandler, owner of the hairdressing academy, said pampering the seniors is among the ways the school gives back to the community.

"It's special for the women to get out, and it's good for our students to be a part of this," Chandler said. "It's important for the students to share the gifts and talents they've been given. I think it does more for the students than they realize."
