SIGNALS: All cars have them

| May 9, 2018 1:00 AM

Mr. Gannon’s letter (Coeur d’Alene Press, May 4) lamenting the absence of turn signal “indicators” on newer vehicles has me puzzled.

Turn signals are required on all cars by federal safety laws. The “indicators” are the lights on the dash/instrument cluster to tell the driver that a turn signal is on. After more than 50 years in the automotive industry, I do not know of any car on the road that is not equipped with both turn signals and turn signal indicators.

Is Mr Gannon writing in jest? Or is he unaware of the above?

Regardless, the cars are so equipped; the problem is in getting drivers to use them. Mr. Gannon correctly points out that the use of turn signals is also required by law. So, the problem is not one of equipping the vehicles; it is one of enforcing the law, which is a whole ‘nother issue and discussion.
