Sandpoint tops Lakeland, reaches 4A Region 1 title game

RATHDRUM — Sandpoint beat third-seeded Moscow 13-3 and top-seeded Lakeland 13-8 on Tuesday at Lakeland High on the first day of the 4A Region 1 softball tournament, moving the second-seeded Bulldogs into Saturday’s championship round.

Lakeland (10-14) will play host to Moscow (0-17) on Thursday at 4 p.m. in a loser-out game. If Lakeland wins, the Hawks will host Sandpoint on Saturday, needing to beat the Bulldogs twice to earn the region’s lone berth to state. Sandpoint needs just one win on Saturday to advance.

Lakeland and Sandpoint tied for first in the 4A Inland Empire League, but Lakeland earned the top seed to regionals based on run differential in the four meetings with Sandpoint.

Taylor Woolley went 3 for 4 and Riley Rivera hit a solo homer for Lakeland.

Audrey Mattila doubled twice and drove in three runs for Sandpoint.

BONNERS FERRY — Becca Malloy pitched a five-hit, five-inning shutout as the Tigers won their playoff opener against the Spartans and advanced to the 3A District 1 championship game.

“All three facets of our game were awesome today,” Timberlake coach Casi Reisenauer said. “We played good defense, our pitcher threw well and we were locked in on offense.”

Maddy Salois and Shelby Starr had three RBIs each for Timberlake.

Weather permitting, the Tigers (12-3) will face district tournament host Bonners Ferry at 4 p.m. today with a berth in the state tournament on the line.

BONNERS FERRY — Seth Villanpando struck out 11 and drove in three runs for the Tigers in a win over the Wildcats in the opening round of the 3A District 1 tournament at Bonners Ferry.

Louis Powell went 3 for 4 with two runs scored for Timberlake (13-6), which faces Bonners Ferry (14-5) in today’s championship game at 4:30 p.m. The Badgers beat Priest River in the other first round game 16-0.

“It was kind of a team effort today,” Timberlake coach Cameron Knigge said. “Louis caught a great game, and put the ball in play each time he was at-bat. We came out a little sluggish in the first inning, but once Seth settled in on the mound, he was good the rest of the way.”

Kellogg (4-13) faces Priest River in a loser-out game today at 2 p.m. at Bonners Ferry.

BONNERS FERRY — Ty Bateman hit a three-run double in the first inning to spark the Badgers past the Spartans in an opening round game in the 3A District 1 tournament.

Shane Walker struck out six in four innings for Bonners Ferry (14-5), which hosts Timberlake in the district championship game today at 4:30 p.m.

Seamus Skeen had two RBIs for Bonners Ferry.

Priest River faces Kellogg in a loser-out game today at 2 p.m. in Bonners Ferry.
