POST FALLS — It is routinely the warmup event for bigger things to come.

Not that Thursday’s District 1 all-star track and field meet at Post Falls High isn’t competitive — far from it — but bigger things are on the horizon next week, and if athletes are lucky enough, in two weeks in the Boise area.

Lake City senior Emily Hernandez took advantage of her opportunity last spring to win her first state 5A shot put title at Dona Larsen Park in Boise.

“It’s very nerve-wracking because everyone expects you to do that again,” Hernandez said. “I’ve just got to remain focused and know that I’ll do well.”

Hernandez entered the shot put with the top distance in the area, throwing 41 feet earlier this year. She is also third in the discus at 121 feet.

“I’ve been training a lot more this year, year-round this year for this,” Hernandez said. “I feel like I’ve gained a lot more muscle this year and am more confident this year than I was last year.”

Hernandez, who has verbally committed to New Mexico State, won the shot put Thursday with a mark of 39 feet, 11 1/2 inches.

“Coach (Robert) McKay — my hammer coach and former college coach — New Mexico State contacted him about me and asked if I could help them,” Hernandez said.

Idaho does not hold the hammer throw at the high school level.

“It’s definitely a different preparation,” Hernandez said. “You’ve got to be a lot more patient with it.”

Hernandez is followed closely behind in the shot put by teammate Keara Simpson. Simpson leads the area in the discus with a throw of 134-6.

“It definitely motivates me to be at my best,” Hernandez said. “We push each other to our limits, and I like that about being her teammate. She’s very supportive, and always pushes me to get better.”

The 5A Region 1 meet begins next Thursday at Coeur d’Alene High with the field events, before moving to Lewiston for the running events Friday. State is May 17-18 at Dona Larsen Park.

“It’s definitely a structure thing for me,” Hernandez said of the all-star meet, regionals and state in consecutive weeks. “It really helps me compete at a high level.”

For Coeur d’Alene High junior Chad Humphreys, his method of running at a high level is staying positive.

“This race, I just treated this kind of as a workout,” said Humphreys, who won the 1,600-meter run in 4 minutes, 39.20 seconds. “I just wanted to come out and have a good performance and feel relaxed. Treat it as a workout going into regionals next week.”

Humphreys also won the 800 and ran the final leg of the Vikings’ winning 4x800 relay.

Unlike most meets this year, weather was not a factor as temperatures remained in the 70s, with a little bit of wind mixed in.

“I really don’t like training in the winter time and training and that stuff,” Humphreys said. “It was pretty windy today, especially for a tall guy like me (6-3). You’ve just got to grind and deal with it.”

Humphreys finished 15th in the 3,200 at state in 2017.

“This season, I’ve just been focusing more on staying positive heading into my races this year,” Humphreys said. “Just keeping a positive mindset has really helped. I’ve had personal records in each meet, and my times keep dropping. Being willing to accept the circumstances and whatever happens, I’ve just been able to push through it.”

Post Falls junior Tyler Trengove set meet records in wins in both the triple jump (43 feet, 10 1/2 inches) and the long jump (22 feet), and also won the high jump. Trengove broke the previous record in the triple jump by 10 1/2 inches.

Sandpoint’s Hannah Davidson won the 800 in a meet record 2:19.43, breaking the previous mark of 2:20.27 set by Emily Callahan of Coeur d’Alene in 2016.

Lakeland’s Jillian Mael (100, 200) and Lake City’s Klaire Mitchell (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles) were multiple winners on the day.

No team scores were kept.
