SPIRIT LAKE — In a battle of the Goliaths in the Intermountain League baseball ranks, one landed just one more shot than the other.

Chris Sabin hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning to send the Bonners Ferry Badgers past the Timberlake Tigers 8-7 in a winner-take-all league finale on Wednesday at Timberlake High.

“It was a battle of the Goliaths, and we weren’t as big as the other Goliath today,” Timberlake coach Cameron Knigge said. “Chris’ home run was the difference.”

The teams were scheduled to begin the game on Tuesday at 4 p.m., but a rainstorm delayed the start of the game until 5:30. With the game tied at 7-7 after seven innings on Tuesday, the game was suspended until Wednesday due to darkness.

“Both teams came out ready to go,” Knigge said. “There was no lull or anything like that. They made one play when it counted, and it happened to be in the top of the ninth inning.”

Bonners Ferry (8-1 in IML) will host the 3A District 1 tournament starting Tuesday, hosting fourth-seeded Priest River (0-9 in league) in the opening round. Timberlake (12-5, 7-2) will face third-seeded Kellogg (3-9 in IML) in its opening round game at Bonners Ferry.

“We hope to see them again at districts,” said Knigge of Bonners Ferry. “Bonners Ferry is a very good team from top to bottom, and you’ve got to play near perfect to beat them. We did it once, and came close twice. I told our guys before the game it wasn’t about who wants it more, but just who makes the play when it counts. And they did today.”

Jacob James had three RBIs and Seth Villanpando two RBIs for Timberlake, which visits Lakeland today.

teams titles at home

ST. MARIES — The St. Maries boys and girls golf teams claimed team titles by mere strokes at their home tournament at St. Maries Golf Course.

St. Maries edged Wallace 360-362 in boys, and the Lumberjack girls beat Lakeside 402-403.

“Our course wasn’t even playable last week for this,” St. Maries coach Bryan Chase said. “The kids have really surprised me this year, with a lot of freshmen and sophomores stepping up and starting to play well right now.”
