CDA Fire Cadet Program is accepting applications

| March 30, 2018 1:00 AM

The Coeur d’Alene Fire Department is taking applications through April 6 for high schoolers interested in a future public safety career.

The Fire Cadet Program offers unpaid positions that last one semester. Cadets are assigned to a station and work directly under the fire captain and crew. They ride along with their assigned crew and observe emergencies such as fires, traffic collisions, medical distresses and public service requests.

Fire cadets are required to participate for a minimum of five hours a week with their respective station. Homework will be assigned and there will be required fire cadet drills. Cadets are expected to have a professional appearance and adhere to a modest dress policy, which includes no visible tattoos or piercings. It is highly recommended that applicants have an updated hepatitis B and tetanus booster.

The testing process for the program is competitive and similar to actual entry-level firefighter testing. Accepted applicants will have to pass a physical fitness test, including an 8.5-minute mile test, 30 push-ups in two minutes and 30 sit-ups in two minutes. Those who pass the physical exam will then go on to a formal interview. Successful applicants may then be placed on an eligibility list for the fall school semester.

To apply, you must be a registered high school senior during the year that you are enrolled in the Cadet Program. Interested juniors should apply now to be considered for next year. You must have a good attendance record, be physically fit, be mature and on track to graduate. A GPA of 2.5 for the most recent quarterly report card is needed. Applications and requirement information are available from school counselors. Applicants must apply in person with a completed application and a copy of the most recent report card or school transcript to CDA Fire Department Headquarters, 300 Foster Ave. Deadline is 4 p.m. on Friday, April 6.

No incomplete or late submissions will be accepted.
