Today's ghastly groaner

| March 29, 2018 1:00 AM

Pythagoras had three squires who served him very well. He decided to reward each one with a saddle made from exotic hides.

To the first squire he gave a buffalo hide saddle. “Master, I truly appreciate your gift, but I must hand it down to my firstborn, who is in training to be a knight and has no saddle.”

“Very well, do as you must!” said Pythagoras.

The second squire was given a rhinoceros hide saddle for his handling of a very tricky situation. “Master, I am deeply honored by your most generous gift, but I too must give my saddle to my son who is in training to be a knight.”

“Very good, do as you must!” replied Pythagoras.

The third squire was a large man who could hold his own in any dilemma was waiting to be knighted by the emperor. Therefore, he was presented with a special hippopotamus hide saddle. “Thank you, I shall treasure it always.”

That is when an idea came to Pythagoras: The squire on the hippopotamus hide is equal to sons of the squires on the other two hides.
