Lakeland splits on first day at tourney
BOISE — After losing to Borah of Boise 10-0 in five innings, Lakeland bounced back and beat Fruitland 11-0 in five innings at Borah High’s Wigle Field on the first day of the Buck’s Athletics Spring Classic baseball tournament Thursday.
Against Fruitland, Dylan Bradbury struck out six and scattered two hits in the shutout for Lakeland (5-3). Braden Gifford went 3 for 3 with two doubles and two RBIs, and Colton Aragon also went 3 for 3, and scored twice.
“We came out a completely different team against Fruitland,” Lakeland coach Jason Bradbury said. “Dylan pitched a heck of a game ... his control was very good, and he had them guessing all game. Braden Gifford came alive with his bat. Colton Aragon also had a good offensive performance. Colton’s a real spark plug for us. It seems like whenever he gets on base, good things happen.”
Against Borah, Lakeland managed just one hit, — a single by Max Baker — and struck out seven times. Hawks pitchers walked six, and Lakeland committed five errors.
“It was a tough morning for us,” Bradbury said. “We gave up way too many free 90s and had multiple mental and physical errors. I thought we should have been able to hang with Borah, but we just couldn’t do anything right. We had a good conversation with the team after the game and challenged them to be better in all phases. Boy they sure stepped it up.”
Lakeland is scheduled to play at Capital of Boise tonight at 5 PDT.
