ADVICE: Grandpa's got plenty

| March 28, 2018 1:00 AM

Recently I was asked by my granddaughter for financial advice. She’s about to join the workforce and is looking for wisdom on how to save and invest her money. She probably will not ask me for advice again! So here goes.

A Dave Ramsey financial course is a great way to start. He speaks plainly, wisely — much, much common sense. Now a few of my own thoughts for her:

- If you cannot pay off your credit card each month, cut it up — never pay interest, EVER. Use cash or check. Paying with cash gets your attention a bit more than using a credit card — a whole bit more!

- Coffee drinker? Brew it at home. Starbucks is for rich folks.

- When buying a car, pay cash. Can’t afford a new one?! Then buy a used one. New cars start losing value by the time you get them home. A car you can’t afford will keep you a slave to your bank and POOR!

- Don’t make quick decisions — sleep on it over night. Sometimes your brain will kick in and you’ll be ever so glad you passed up that “once in a lifetime” offer. Always remember, if it sounds too good to be true, leave it for the next sucker.

I’ve made about every mistake a human can make and am still standing. This should give me some sort of credibility with my granddaughter — sure hope so!

Last thoughts: Rise early; be kind to your co-workers; pray often; tithe; forgive; vote Republican. I love you Maggie.
