Paul Maurice Kauffman, 91

November 27,1926 - March 24,1018

MCPO Paul Kauffman, 91, (U.S. Navy, Retired), of Hayden, Idaho, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 24, 2018, at Life Care of Coeur d’Alene, surrounded by his loving family.

Paul was born in Kalispell, Mont., on Nov. 27, 1926, to Lillian Anderson and Paul Russell Kauffman. He resided there until he enlisted in the Navy in 1944. He proudly served his country during three wars; World War II, Korean and Vietnam. During his 30 years of service, the vessels and stations served on included: U.S. Naval Training Center, Farragut, Idaho; USS West Virginia BB 46; USS Ault DD 698; U.S. Naval Training Center, San Diego, Calif.; Naval Communications Station, Yokosuka, Japan; USS Kidd DD 661; Naval Communications Station, Washington, D.C.; Military Assistance Advisory Group, Taiwan, China; USS O’brien DD 725; USS Oklahoma City CLG 5; Commander Fleet Activities, Yokosuka, Japan; Commander Service Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, Honolulu, Hawaii; Naval Support Activity, Da Nang, Vietnam; U.S. Fleet Post Office, San Francisco, Calif.; Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, Pentagon, Washington, D.C.

It was during his time in San Francisco that he met his wife of 50 years, Betty Kauffman. They were inseparable since the night they first met. They left San Francisco and headed back to Washington, D.C., where they gave birth to their one and only child, Lisa, in 1969.

Paul is preceded by death of his parents, Lillian Anderson and Paul Kauffman; sister, Pat Balderson and brother, Jim Kauffman.

Paul is survived by his wife, Betty Kauffman; daughter, Lisa (J.R.) Bariel Ewing; granddaughter, Amber Bariel and nephew, Bruce (Justine) Balderson.

Paul’s family would like to take a moment and extend their deepest gratitude to the entire staff of Life Care of Coeur d’Alene. You truly became a second family and cared for him as he was one of your own. Although the last couple years have been difficult, knowing he had been in such great hands has helped so much. I know Paul felt the love, care, respect and support as well.
