Lake City finishes 4-0 at Lewiston tourney

LEWISTON — Lake City completed a 4-0 run at the North/South tournament, beating Mountain View of Meridian 9-1 and Caldwell 8-3 on Saturday to improve to 8-0 heading into spring break.
Junior Nick Kaufman went 3 for 4 and drove in three runs for Lake City against Caldwell. He had an RBI single in the third inning and a two-run double in the seventh. Bridger Rinaldi added a pair of doubles and drove in a run for the Timberwolves.
“Nick stepped up tremendously for us today,” said Lake City coach Paul Manzardo of Kaufman, who entered in place of Bennett Cunningham following an injury against Mountain View. “Nick played a good game, had some great at-bats and ran the bases extremely well. It was a complete team effort all weekend. Our pitching has done a great job thus far, and they’re really believing in what coach (Lake City pitching coach CJ) Ketron is teaching.”
Against Mountain View, Kodie Kolden scattered five hits and struck out five in a complete-game for the Timberwolves, who scored once in the fifth inning to break a 1-all tie, then pulled away with three runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh.
Kyle Manzardo’s RBI single in the fifth scored Kaufman in the fifth with the go-ahead run in the fifth. Rinaldi added a two-run single in the sixth.
Lake City retuns to action April 9 at home vs. Lakeland.

Coeur d’Alene falls to Mountain View, rolls past Caldwell
CLARKSTON, Wash. — Colt Rowley went 3 for 4 with two runs scored for the Vikings in a 12-2 win over Caldwell at Clarkston High to conclude the North/South tournament 3-1.
“Colt was a stud against Caldwell and had a great game,” Coeur d’Alene coach Nick Mahin said. “Both him and Carter (Friesz, who went 2 for 2 with two walks, two RBIs and a run scored) had great games.”
Jayce Bailey also drove in two runs for Coeur d’Alene against Caldwell.
Earlier, a four-run third inning and a seven-run fifth cost the Vikings in an 11-5 loss to Mountain View of Meridian.
“If you take away those bad innings, it’s a good game,” said Mahin, whose team got solo home runs from Noah Mayfield and Jayce Bailey against Mountain View. “We played well.”
Coeur d’Alene (4-3) plays at Lakeland on April 3.

Post Falls tops Hillcrest,
falls to Clarkston
LEWISTON — Quin Bennett had two hits and a key two-run single in the sixth inning to push the Trojans past the Knights in the North/South tournament at Church Field.
Leading 2-1, Post Falls extended the advantage to 3-1 on an RBI single by Buer, followed by Bennett’s two-run single to put the game out of reach.
Bennett allowed four hits over six innings on the mound in the win.
“Quin made them spread those hits around so they were just enough that they didn’t hurt them,” Post Falls coach Mick Zeller said. “We played OK defense, and he was effective enough to keep them off balance enough where they couldn’t dig in.”
Later, Nate Buer had an RBI double, but the Trojans allowed three unearned runs on three errors to fall to Clarkston 5-1.
“We just weren’t efficient on offense,” Zeller said. “In the first inning, we had six guys to the plate, and couldn’t get anyone in. We had guys on in each inning, and just couldn’t get a ground ball, or a base hit.”
Post Falls (3-5) is scheduled to return to action April 3 at home vs. East Valley.

LEWISTON — The Bulldogs started poorly, but bounced back to nearly earn the doubleheader split, falling 16-1 and 9-7 to the 5A Bengals in a nonleague doubleheader.
The Bulldogs (1-4) were not ready to play in the opener, digging an 11-0 deficit in the first inning and scratching out just four hits in the five-inning loss.
Sandpoint looked much more like the team that finished third at state in 4A last year in the second game, as Bri Baldree struck out eight and also banged out three doubles among her four hits and scored twice in defeat. Audrey Mattila started the game for the Bulldogs, allowing three runs to tie the game at 3-3 in the first inning before Baldree came in and logged some quality innings.
The Bulldogs, who finished the second game with 12 hits, led 7-3 heading into the fourth inning, before the Bengals (4-1) plated six runs to cap the scoring. Kaitlan Ward finished with two RBIs in the loss, as the Bulldogs struggled to recover from the shock of the rough first inning.
“We’re not ready in the first inning, allowing teams to jump ahead. It’s taking us an inning to settle in. The defense was not executing,” lamented Bulldog head coach Elizabeth Hawkins-Williams, who felt her team bounced back strong in the second game. “We came out with so much more fight. We were swinging much more aggressively. Bri pitched really well, which was great to see.”
Sandpoint hosts West Valley on Friday.

Davidson leads Bulldog girls to Lewiston invite title
LEWISTON — Sandpoint’s Hannah Davidson had wins in the 800-meter run and pole vault, and ran a leg in a winning distance medley to help the Bulldog girls claim a team title at the Lewiston Invitational at Sweeney Track.
Sandpoint finished with 148.33 points, followed by Coeur d’Alene with 109.5.
Nate Burch won the 200 meters and 110 hurdles and was part of the winning 4x200 relay for the Coeur d’Alene boys, which finished third behind Lewiston and Sandpoint.
