Coeur d'Alene wins twice at North/South tourney

LEWISTON — Senior Jayce Bailey sparked the Coeur d’Alene offense with a two-run triple, and later scored on a wild pitch in a five-run third inning to push the Vikings past the Clarkston Bantams 11-1 in their opening game at the North-South tournament at Harris Field on Friday.
Zach Mackimmie allowed three hits over five innings to earn the win on the mound for Coeur d’Alene, which had four players with two RBI each.
“Zach just came out and threw strikes and set the tone early on,” Coeur d’Alene coach Nick Mahin said. “I’ve told him he’s got the perfect bulldog mentalilty. We made a few errors today, but nothing fazed him. He just kept throwing strikes and took over the ballgame.”
Noah Mayfield, Michael Dooley and Quinton Bunch also had two RBIs for Coeur d’Alene.
Later, Bailey had three hits and two RBIs in the Vikings’ 9-3 win over Hillcrest of Idaho Falls. Mayfield scored three runs in the win.
“Everyone had good at-bats all day today,” said Mahin of his team, which played for the first time following the death of the school’s principal Troy Schueller on Wednesday. “Considering all the adversity these guys have been through in the last 72 hours, it was impressive. With everything we’ve been going through, it was impressive to see them respond how they did.”
Coeur d’Alene (3-2) is scheduled to face Mountain View of Meridian today at 9 a.m. and close out the tournament against Caldwell at 4 p.m., both games at Clarkston High.

Lake City wins
twice at North/South
LEWISTON — Kodie Kolden went 4 for 7 with five runs scored on the day as Lake City beat Clarkston 12-2 and Hillcrest of Idaho Falls 9-4 on the first day of the North/South Tournament.
Kyle Manzardo went 2 for 3 with two runs and two RBIs against Hillcrest for Lake City, which improved to 6-0. Zach Sensel drove in three runs, including a two-run single in a four-run sixth inning.
In the first game against Clarkston, Brandon Gay struck out four and allowed two hits over five innings for Lake City. Kolden went 2 for 4 and scored three runs, and Bridger Rinaldi also had two hits for the Timberwolves, who broke open a 3-2 game with four runs in the fourth inning and five in the fifth.

Post Falls one-hits Caldwell for split
LEWISTON — After suffering a 2-1 setback to Mountain View of Meridian, the Trojans — on the heels of a 13-strikeout showing by Jake Rutherford — shut out Caldwell 9-0 on the opening day of the North-South tournament at Church Field.
“Jake did a great job of getting ahead of hitters, which was key to his 13 strikeouts,” Post Falls coach Mick Zeller said. “He allowed a four-pitch walk and a double in back-to-back hitters, but that was it. He was getting the curveball over, as well as his changeup. It was really a textbook performance and just like you want your pitchers to throw all the time.”
Tanner McCliment-Call hit a two-run double in the fourth inning and Jake Pfennigs had a two-run triple for Post Falls (2-4), which faces Hillcrest today at 11:30 a.m., then concludes the tournament against Clarkston at 2 p.m. at Church Field.
Earlier, Caden Cripps singled to score a run in the fourth inning for the Trojans, who stranded runners on base in the third and fourth inning of a loss to Mountain View.
“We just couldn’t get much going offensively in that first game,” Zeller said. “It was just one of those days. We hit four balls out of the infield in that game, and three of them were outs. It was just frustrating.”
