Vikings play, on a somber day

| March 22, 2018 1:00 AM

- SOFTBALL

COEUR d’ALENE — Before the Coeur d’Alene softball team’s home opener started, they had a choice.

Forfeit, and go home.

Or, play, because he would have wanted it that way.

Hailey Lyons had two RBIs and Kaylin Donovan also had an RBI for the Vikings, who fell to the West Valley Eagles 12-11 at Larry Schwenke Field on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, Coeur d’Alene High principal Troy Schueller, who had been the principal at the school since 2016, passed away from an apparent suicide.

“We gave the girls the choice to either play or forfeit,” Coeur d’Alene coach Lindsie Scholwinski said. “Our girls stepped up and asked to play today to honor him, because that’s what we would want. They really showed their strength. We weren’t sure if we were going to play today, but we thought we’d at least start the game. I know it’s not easy, or something you take with a grain of salt. The girls, they were with Troy every day at school. Our strength really showed more than anything today and it says a lot about their character. Life just threw us a curveball today.”

Coeur d’Alene (0-5) is scheduled to play at Lakeland on April 3.

COEUR d’ALENE — Brandon Gay reached base on a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the seventh for Lake City. William Mayo, pinch-running for Gay, scored on a single by Brock Sween to send the game to extra innings.

“The boys were really resilent today and showed a lot of grit,” Lake City coach Paul Manzardo said. “They really kind of grinded it out. Freeman’s a good team. They’re well-coached and it was a good game both ways. We pitched the ball well and it was nice to see some different guys step up and do different things.”

Cunningham led off the eighth with a triple as the Timberwolves had two hits over the first seven innings.

Lake City (4-0) competes in the North/South tournament on Friday and Saturday in Lewiston.
