RATHDRUM — Abby Melton had five hits, including a three-run triple in the fifth inning, to spark the Post Falls Trojans past the Lakeland Hawks 16-6 in nonleague play on Tuesday at Lakeland High.

“One of the things we didn’t do over the weekend is have a swingers mentality,” said first-year Post Falls coach Holly Gleaves, whose team went 0-3 to open the season last weekend in the Tri-Cities. “We’ve been working on being more aggressive at the plate and looking to swing the bat, and it seemed to pay off tonight. Dinah (Seymour) had a good strike ratio tonight, and it took a lot of pressure off the defense.”

Kaycie Barber had three hits and three RBIs for Post Falls (1-3), which returns to action April 3 at home vs. Moscow in a doubleheader.

Allison Russum had two RBIs for Lakeland (0-5), which is scheduled to open 4A Inland Empire League play on Thursday, hosting Moscow for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.

COEUR d’ALENE — Kodie Kolden drove in five runs in the second game, including a three-run home run in the sixth inning, as the Timberwolves swept the Bears at Lake City High.

“We had some really good approaches at the plate and played some solid defense for it only being our second game outside,” Lake City coach Paul Manzardo said. “We’re swinging the bats really well right now, but still have another month of baseball left. We need to work on getting better each day and stay true to the Timberwolf way of baseball.”

Moscow pitchers walked 17, including 10 in the second game.

Conner Conigliaro had three RBIs in the second game and Kyle Manzardo drove in three runs in the opener for Lake City (3-0), which hosts Freeman today at 4 p.m.

“It was a total team effort tonight,” Lakeland coach Jason Bradbury said. “I was super impressed with the way we hit the ball up and down the lineup. We pulled up Tristan from JV because we needed to find another outfielder, and he did very well at that. I loved his confidence, speed and composure, and can’t wait to see him play more with us.”

POST FALLS — The Hawks swept in boys singles and the Trojans did the same in girls doubles in a match at Post Falls High.

“Lakeland’s coach (Tyler Jacobs) is going a really good job with that team,” Post Falls coach Kirk Hartzell said. “The kids were well organzied and he had a great understanding of how to put his team together. Their boys team looked solid and it was our seventh day on the court. Our girls doubles played well, but credit to Lakeland, they played tough and I liked what they’re doing. They were as good as I’ve seen in a while.”

Lakeland is scheduled to host Lake City today at 3 p.m.
