Trojan baseball splits with Chiawana
- BASEBALL
PASCO, Wash. — Four players had two hits each for Post Falls, which scored six runs on five walks in the top of the seventh inning to rally past the Chiawana Riverhawks 8-7 in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday night.
“They just walked the yard in the seventh,” Post Falls coach Mick Zeller said. “They brought in a guy to close it out, and he couldn’t find the zone. They brought in another guy, he couldn’t either.”
Jake Rutherford, Jake Pfennigs and Brock Zeller had singles in the inning, with Zeller’s driving in a run in the seventh. Austin Higgins struck out three in two innings of scoreless relief to get the win for Post Falls.
In the second game, Chiawana scored three unearned runs in the first inning on the way to the split. Quin Bennett hit a solo home run leading off the second inning for Post Falls in the nightcap.
“We didn’t play clean, crisp baseball,” Zeller said. “We dropped some fly balls and didn’t make the routine play. That will come with more field time.”
Post Falls travels to Kennewick today at 11 a.m., then plays at Kamiakin at 3 p.m.

SPOKANE VALLEY — The Trojans boys swept in singles and doubles matches that reached a conclusion before rain called off a match against the Knights.
“This match came after our fourth practice on the courts, so we were just kind of flying blind in this match,” Post Falls coach Kirk Hartzell said. “We went into it and treated it like a practice match and had some kids that were stressed out about performing. We just tried to stress to them to learn and have fun doing it.”
Shery Mae Espina won in straight sets in girls singles for Post Falls, which travels to Rogers of Spokane on Tuesday.
“Shery Mae didn’t find out she was playing singles until they were announcing the varsity matches,” Hartzell said. “After her match, she was in full tears and I was wondering if she was hurt. She was just so proud and excited that she’d won. It was really kind of a neat moment and I was glad to be a part of that. You don’t get to see that kind of genuine moment out of kids that often.”
