Jack D. Sumner

It is with great sadness that the family of Jack D. Sumner announces his passing on March 10, 2018, at the age of 81. Jack was surrounded by his family at Hospice of North Idaho Schneidmiller. Jack will be lovingly remembered by his wife Barbara of 58 years and his children, Lane (Terri) and Jay (Anne). Jack will also be fondly remembered by his four grandchildren, Roman, Darby, Madison and Jackson.

Jack was born Jan. 4, 1937, in Moscow, Idaho to Jack and Claudine Sumner. He married the love of his life, Barbara, on August 14, 1959. Jack graduated from Moscow High School in 1955 and began working for the U.S. Forest Service for the next 29 years. Upon retiring, he went to work for Idaho Veneer as the assistant timber manager for 16 years.

Jack loved and had a passion for hunting, fishing and any sporting event. Summing up Jack’s life, we keep coming back to one thought. Never will you meet a man who more faithfully lived his values. He was a teacher of all things. His method was simple. He taught by example. He was loyal. His faithfulness to the people in his life could be seen in the way he steadfastly provided for and supported his family. Above all, he loved his grandchildren. He made it a point to attend everything they were involved with. They could always look into the stands or audience and find their number one supporter. Grandpa Jack was so thankful that his grandchildren were all raised in Coeur d’Alene, allowing them to create the amazing relationships that they each had with him.

Jack had a quiet dignity, respecting himself the way he respected others. As he faced his final days, his body ravaged with the cancer, he never had one moment of self-pity. He has achieved success because he left this world a better place than he found it. Jack passed away into the loving arms of Jesus. The world lost a great man and heaven gained a great soul.

Jack is preceded in death by his siblings, Melvis Sumner, June Hamilton, Evelyn and Marilyn Flint. He is survived by his sister, Phyllis Veien and brother, Dennis Sumner, both of Moscow; sister, Libby Herres of Kennewick, Wash. and sister, Linda Urza of Washington, Utah.

A celebration of life will be held this summer. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Coeur d’Alene High School Athletics, 5530 N. Fourth St., Coeur d’Alene, ID 83814, or Hospice of North Idaho Schneidmiller, 2290 W. Prairie Ave., Coeur d’Alene, ID 83815.
