WALKOUT: For positive change

When it comes to what Stan Olson said on the topic of school protests, I would like to say I completely agree and think this is a positive thing to see.

Protests encourage students to think for themselves and take action. If a student views society as something he or she can change without having to rebel against it, they don’t have to. With room for change, they have more than the option of hating a society that is broken. Instead they see a society they can change, and if it can be changed, how can it be hopeless? And why would you want to rebel?

While some will still prefer to hate society and become an enemy of it, given more than one option youth will become the change needed. There is already a mentality of hating and distrusting the society because of how broken it is, which some choose to follow. This is the negative side of protesting that you have to control and gives all protesting a bad name.

Then there are protesters that I believe the superintendent is encouraging. The ones who want change because they understand the society is good and change can be brought about positively and legally without causing hurt to society. But, if the negative side is separated from the positive side of protesting, then the public’s concern should be lessened.

I am a 13-year-old boy from the Rose Lake area and came across this story. All in all, I agree and think you have to separate the negative and positive sides of protesting in order to help lay any public concern to rest.
