Two police officers in Sandpoint have been hospitalized after they were shot while responding to a call at Ridley Village apartments.

The Bonner County Sheriff's Office sent an alert to area residents around 3:30 a.m. Monday asking them to stay inside for a time.

The officers' names have not been released and their condition was not immediately available, but both were believed to be in surgery Monday morning.

According to the Sandpoint Police Department's Facebook page, the shooting happened when the officers responded to a home, and a suspect stepped out of the home and began firing at the officers.

Both officers on scene were struck. One officer was transported to Kootenai Medical Center and is currently in surgery.

The shooting suspect is dead.
