"E Equals" is the newest cinematic endeavor of young Coeur d'Alene filmmaker Caden Butera.

"It’s a character-driven sci-fi feature film," Butera said Wednesday. "It has some elements of action but it is mostly about character and story. It's not just a bunch of violence and fluff."

And, the writer and director emphasizes, it's all about local talent.

"We want to showcase the plethora of creative talent in this area, from the local theater actors to the amazing makeup artists, writers, costume designers, musical composers, etc.," Butera said. "We want to be able to shine a light on the artists in North Idaho by showing their work in a feature film and display it through film festivals across the world."

"E Equals" follows actress Aubrey Shimek Davis as Kate, a mysterious female who is running from something. Jeremy John Rodgers and Mason Beals also star in the 20-minute pilot, which Butera hopes to turn into a full feature-length film.

"We're going to look at getting 30-plus actors involved and hopefully paying them for their work if we get this funded successfully," he said. "The moment this goes according to plan, we're going to have casting calls left and right. I want to give everyone in this area a shot of being a part of it. Anyone who is interested at all I want to have involved in any capacity."

Butera, Coeur d'Alene High School grad and lifelong film fan, is hosting an interactive premiere event for "E Equals" at 5:30 p.m. Friday, March 9 at the Hayden Cinema 6. Admission is $10. Proceeds will help fund the full film, as will contributions made to the Kickstarter campaign that will be launched during the premiere. Once live, people will be able to donate and keep up with progress at http://kck.st/2FIWxQY.

The Hayden Cinema is located at 300 W. Centa Drive.
