Prairie notches first win at wood-bat tourney

POST FALLS — Matt Fleming pitched a five-inning, two-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts as the Prairie Cardinals beat the Seattle area-based Northwest Blaze 10-0 in their second game Friday at the Best of the Northwest wood-bat tournament at Post Falls High.

Seth Villanpando went 2 for 3 and drove in three runs for Prairie (5-15), 1-3 in tourney play after three days. Trevor Vandever hit a two-run double in an eight-run fourth inning, and scored three runs in the game for the Cardinals. Villapando also hit a two-run double in the fourth.

Earlier, Prairie out-hit the Seattle Braves 18U squad, but walked 11 batters in a 13-5 loss.

Brock Zeller, Seth Villanpando, Tanner McCliment-Call, Harrison Reid and Spencer Zeller had two hits each for Prairie, which trailed 6-5 after four innings, only to see the Braves score six runs in the top of the fifth.

Brad Thorson went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and three runs scored for Seattle, whose pitchers walked nine.
