Gary ‘Buck’ Johnson, 81

Gary “Buck” Johnson, age 81, passed away at The Schneidmiller House in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho on June 19, 2018.

Buck was born in Greenbush, Minn.,on April 19, 1937, to Norman L. and Grace C. (Hoskins) Johnson. At an early age his family moved to Longview, Wash. He was raised in Longview and graduated from R.A. Long High School in 1955. He attended Lower Columbia College for three years. Buck married Darlene Vasicko on July 3, 1958. They moved to Spokane, Wash., where Buck attended Eastern Washington University. He worked for Union Oil in Spokane and Kennewick, Wash.

He moved to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, in 1972, and after several years with Union Oil he started Panhandle Recycling. He sold the business and went to work for Inland Marine. Buck then went into sales and was the sales representative for Marine Wholesale for Idaho, Washington and Eastern Montana. He started Eagle Marine Supply and the Buck Johnson Company.

Buck attended Christ the King Lutheran Church in Coeur d’Alene. He was a member of the Panhandle Kiwanis Club in Coeur d’Alene and a commodore for the Coeur d’Alene Chamber of Commerce. In 2009 he received the Ed Abbott Award for Outstanding Service to the Coeur d’Alene Chamber of Commerce. He enjoyed hunting, boating, fishing, golfing and chasing his grandchildren.

Buck is survived by his wife of 60 years, Darlene of Coeur d’Alene; two children, Randy Johnson of Newport, Ore. and Sandi (Tom) Pointer of Calgary, Alberta; five grandchildren, Eric Johnson, Paul Johnson, Gary R. Johnson, Rachel Hrk and Jillian Pointer; two great-grandchildren, Madison and Katalina and sister-in-law, Sally Jo Vasicko.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Norman L. and Grace Johnson; sister, Dorothy Kelnhofer and niece, Susan Johnson.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Monday, June 25, 2018, at English Funeral Chapel, 1133 N. Fourth St., Coeur d’Alene. A reception will follow the service at the funeral chapel reception center.
