Hatley reaches quarterfinals

of PNW men’s amateur

DUPONT, Wash. ­— Reid Hatley of Hayden Lake won twice on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Pacific Northwest Golf Association men’s amateur at The Home Course.

Hatley defeated Kyle Cornett of Mill Creek, Wash., 1-up in the Round of 32, then beat Carter Graf of Sylvan Lake, Alberta, 3 and 1. Hatley, the No. 7 seed, will face Spencer Tibbits of Vancouver, Wash., the 63rd seed, in the quarters for a berth in the semifinals later today.

Derek Bayley of Rathdrum lost to Graf 2 and 1 in the Round of 32 on Thursday.

Post Falls seeking

golf, swimming coaches

POST FALLS — Post Falls High golf coach Maria Kostina and Trojans swimming coach Maria Portue resigned recently.

Kostina, who coached the golf team for five seasons, including several trips to state, resigned for personal reasons.

Portue, who coached the swim team for four seasons, resigned for work-related reasons.

Chiefs deal McKay,

acquire King

SPOKANE — The Spokane Chiefs announced a pair of trades Thursday.

The first sent 19-year-old Riley McKay to the Saskatoon Blades in exchange for a fourth-round pick in 2019 and a seventh round pick in the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft. McKay, a Swan River, Manitoba, product, played 113 games with Spokane over the last two seasons. In that time he recorded 22 points (7 goals, 15 assists). The 6-foot, 209-pound forward is known for his physical presence, but can also contribute offensively. He was listed by Spokane in 2014.

Later, the Chiefs acquired 18-year-old center Michael King from the Kootenay Ice. The Winnipeg, Manitoba, native recorded 15 points (8 goals, 7 assista) for Kootenay last season. He totaled nine points in 66 games as a 16-year-old the season prior.

In return for King, a former seventh-round pick in 2015, the Ice receive a conditional fifth-round pick in the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft.

MLB draft picks Bush,

White to attend WSU

PULLMAN — A pair of Washington State baseball incoming freshmen both chose to attend WSU after both were selected in the Major League Baseball Draft last month.

Right-handed pitcher Brandon White (6-8, 200 pounds) out of W.F. West High in Chehalis, Wash., was drafted in the 14th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers and left-handed pitcher Ky Bush (6-5, 225) out of Fremont High in Plain City, Utah, was selected in the 40th round by the Kansas City Royals.

Ten members of the Washington State incoming freshman class, including infielders Kyle Manzardo and Kodie Kolden of Lake City High, were recently named to USA Today all-state teams.

Tripp joins WSU

PULLMAN — Kenny Tripp was named Washington State men’s basketball’s assistant coordinator of operations, head coach Ernie Kent announced Thursday.

Tripp joins the Cougars after one year as an assistant coach for Division II Metropolitan State University of Denver in 2017-18. At Metro State, Tripp assisted in all areas of the program, including the organization of team travel, academics, the recruitment of potential student-athletes, and working on the court to develop the team’s post players.

Prior to his stint with the Roadrunners, Tripp served as a graduate assistant for the men’s basketball program at Division II Regis University of Denver for two years (2015-17).

His graduate assistantship followed four years as a student manager at the University of Nevada. During his time at Nevada, the Wolf Pack won the Western Athletic Conference regular season championship and made a postseason appearance in the NIT in 2012.

A native of Sacramento, Calif., Tripp earned his bachelor’s degree in business management from Nevada in 2015, and in 2017 earned his Master of Business Administration with an emphasis in strategic management from Regis.

Clevenger hired as

Idaho women’s soccer coach

MOSCOW — Jeremy Clevenger is set to take over the helm of Idaho Vandal soccer, becoming the fifth head coach in program history. Clevenger joins the program with more than 10 years of collegiate soccer coaching experience.

Clevenger joins the program after two seasons at Northern Iowa. While there, the Panthers saw unprecedented success, setting a number of program records along the way. The team won 14 games in 2017, the most in program history, and recorded 11 shutouts, the most in team and Missouri Valley Conference history. The Panthers advanced to the MVC Tournament Championship game with a pair of shutout wins along the way.

In his first season at UNI, the Panthers had their highest conference finish in program history at the time, while also setting then-team records for goals, points and shutouts.

Prior to UNI, Clevenger spent four seasons as the head coach of Western State College in Gunnison, Colo. There, Clevenger started the program, and quickly led the team to national prominence with wins over ranked Division II opponents.

He spent one season at Fort Hays State as an assistant with both the men and the women, also in their first seasons as programs. His previous stops include Houston Baptist, Baylor, Ottawa University, Central Missouri and San Joaquin Delta College.
