Northwest Premier goes 2-0; Lums, Prairie both 1-1 on first day of wood-bat tourney

Austin Higgins struck out 10 in 7 1/3 innings, and scored the game’s only run on an error in the bottom of the eighth as Northwest Premier beat the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen 1-0 in the first game of the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene Wood Bat Classic on Thursday morning at Thorco Field in Coeur d’Alene.

Trevor Luckey and Jake Rutherford each had two hits for Northwest Premier, a select team comprised of local players.

Levi Haen scattered five hits in seven shutout innings for the Lums, and Bennett Cunningham had two hits.

Northwest Premier also won its second game of the day, beating Spokane Crew Black 5-2.

In their second game, the Lums scored three runs in the bottom of the first and went on to beat the Calgary Blues 4-2.

Jackson Sumner gave up three hits and pitched six shutout innings for Coeur d’Alene, before the Blues scored a pair of unearned runs off him in the seventh. Sumner also scored a pair of runs for the Lums.

Jack Bloom singled in a run in the first and delivered a sacrifice fly in the fifth for Coeur d’Alene.

The Lums (5-1) are scheduled to play Sedro-Woolley tonight at 6 at Thorco Field.

At Post Falls High, the Prairie Cardinals opened tourney play by bashing Hodgen Distributing 20-7.

Prairie trailed 6-4 before erupting for 12 runs in the top of the fourth inning. Seth Villanpando hit a two-run single in the fourth, and finished 3 for 4 with three RBIs and four runs scored. Matt Fleming added a two-run double, and Spencer Zeller hit a two-run double, and finished 3 for 5 with six RBIs and two runs scored.

Hodgen pitchers combined to walk 10 batters and hit three.

Prairie lost 14-10 to the Medicine Hat Monarchs in its second game of the day.

Harrison Reid went 3 for 4 with two doubles, three RBIs and a run scored for Prairie (6-19). Brock Zeller was 3 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI, and Villanpando went 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Also at Post Falls High, the Northern Lakes Mountaineers lost 17-0 to the Spokane Expos 19U, and tied the Medicine Hat Monarchs 8-8.

Riley Whelan pitched a five-inning perfect game with four strikeouts for the Expos against Northern Lakes. Kodie Kolden, a recent Lake City High grad, went 4 for 5 with two RBIs and four runs scored. Kyle Manzardo, another former Timberwolf, went 2 for 4, drove in a run and scored once.

The Northern Lakes-Medicine Hat game was called due to time limit after nine innings. Colton Aragon went 3 for 5 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Brandon Gay drove in three for the Mountaineers.

At Shadle Park’s Al K. Jackson Field, the North Idaho Black Sox beat the Shadle Park Shockers 3-1, and lost 2-0 to Hanford.

The Black Sox are scheduled to play Juanita, British Columbia, today at 3:30 p.m. at Jackson Field.

Northern Lakes is scheduled to play Hodgen Distributing today at 10:30 a.m. and the Prairie Cardinals at 3:30 p.m., both at Post Falls High. Prairie is also slated to play the Spokane Expos 19U tonight at 6 at Post Falls High.
