Northern Lakes splits; Black Sox top Prairie

OROFINO — Brandon Filler hit a grand slam in the third inning as the Northern Lakes Mountaineers beat Orofino 12-0 in the first game of a class A North Idaho League doubleheader on Saturday.

Orofino won the second game 7-6.

In the first game, Colton Aragon pitched a three-hitter with four strikeouts for Northern Lakes. He also went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Ezra Grigg drove in three runs, Tristan Clift hit a two-run double in the fourth inning, and Dustin Smith added a two-run double in the fifth. Jack McDonald went 3 for 3 and scored four runs.

In the second game, Filler drove in a pair of runs for Northern Lakes, which scored a run in the top of the seventh to pull within one, and had the bases loaded before the next batter grounded into a fielder’s choice to end the game.

Northern Lakes is scheduled to play a doubleheader today at St. Maries, beginning at 3 p.m.

SPOKANE VALLEY — A pair of North Idaho-based teams headed across the border for a Best of the Northwest wood-bat tournament game, with the North Idaho Black Sox prevailing over the Prairie Cardinals at East Valley High.

The Black Sox improved to 14-10-1, 2-3 in the tournament, with the win. Prairie is 5-16, 1-4 in tourney play.
