Kellogg tops St. Maries in OT

| January 21, 2018 12:00 AM

ST. MARIES — Chase Jerome scored 13 of his game-high 17 points in the second half and overtime for the Kellogg Wildcats in a 57-52 win over the St. Maries Lumberjacks in the boys Brawl for the Ball spirit game on Saturday.

“We slowed them down a little bit in the first half and ran a zone on them in the first half and really limited their chances,” St. Maries coach Bryan Chase said. “We mixed it up and went man and zone in the second half, but they found a way to get Jerome going.”

Kellogg used a 10-0 run in the third quarter to even the score at 30. Grant Nearing hit a jumper with seven seconds remaining to send the game to overtime for the Wildcats.

“It was a really fun atmosphere down here,” said Chase, whose team finished 8 for 20 from the free-throw line. “We didn’t shoot well from the line, and that was the difference.”

Kellogg (8-3) travels to Medical Lake on Thursday.

Jackson Pritchard scored 12 points and Kevin Duffield had eight rebounds for St. Maries (10-2), which hosts Liberty on Wednesday.

Matheson added 14 points for Coeur d’Alene (7-7), which has won three straight.

The Vikings clinched the win by going 15 of 19 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter. Whittaker was 7 of 8 from the line for the game.
