Idaho's first community Hospice Campus

| February 28, 2018 10:40 AM

Hospice of North Idaho is building the first-ever community Hospice Campus in Idaho. The non-profit is expanding development of their 6-acre parcel located at 2290 West Prairie Avenue in Coeur d’Alene. The property has been home to the Schneidmiller House since 2011, which is also the only facility of its kind in Idaho.

The Hospice Campus includes a two-story Community Building. The ground floor includes a 200-person capacity community room and several education rooms. The north wing is dedicated to grief support programming and private counseling rooms. Including community bereavement events, more than 3,000 people received grief and loss care last year.

“Our program needs have outgrown the building space we have now,” said Hospice of North Idaho executive director Kim Ransier. Hospice staff will move its Government Way office to the new campus in late February 2018.

The building’s second floor offers workspace for staff, including nurses and social workers continuing to provide in-home care and care at skilled nursing facilities. Moving nearly 100 staff members onto campus allows enhanced care and patient accessibility at the Schneidmiller House. The community’s Hospice Campus extends the Schneidmiller House grounds, offering expanded walking paths, green space, reflection areas and gardens offering families a place of peace and comfort for end-of-life journeys.

“We have held a long-term vision for building one campus that houses our nurses, aides, social workers and the entire care team and offers educational programming and events to our community.” Ransier said.

The project is a major undertaking made possible by generous gifts from the community and by special funding and financing from the Idaho Health Facilities Authority and Mountain West Bank. Architect Steve Roth of Architects West led the development of the building plans in close coordination with Hospice staff.

President John Young, of Young Construction Group, expressed his excitement to be a part of the project saying, “Hospice has touched the lives of our family and many of our employees’ families, making this relationship even more special. We are proud to be part of the team.”

“We’ve received many inquiries from people about how they can help the Hospice mission,” Ransier said. “Dedicating the name of a loved one to be with us on campus creates a lasting memory, and supports the Hospice mission.”

Outdoor spaces such as gardens, park benches and indoor spaces like event rooms and counseling spaces are currently available for dedication or in memory of loved ones.
