Post Falls leads big after first day in 5A

| February 24, 2018 12:00 AM

POCATELLO — One team has put itself in a historic spot after the first day.

Another is as close as it can get to its first team title since 1989.

What a wonderful start to the state wrestling tournaments at Holt Arena for our little schools on the prairie on Friday.

Post Falls, behind 15 semifinalists, holds the state 5A lead with 159.5 points.

Meanwhile in 4A, Lakeland — with seven semifinalists of its own — are tied with Minico at 121.5 points for the team lead.

5A: During a team meeting on Thursday, Post Falls coach Pete Reardon talked to his team about moving a boulder, and how difficult it can be.

“The first few pushes are hard, but once you get rolling, it destroys everything in its path,” said Reardon, in his ninth season as Trojans coach. “And that’s what we did today.”

Post Falls will send 15 wrestlers to the semifinal round today and is leading the 5A team scoring with 159.5 points. Bonneville of Idaho Falls is second with 98.5.

“It’s different for sure,” said Reardon, who coached the Trojans to back-to-back state titles in 2015 and 2016. “We’ve never had 15 placers, let alone 15 in the semifinals before. We’ve had 12 in the semis and wound up with seven in the finals, but it’s been a pretty amazing day so far.”

Roddy Romero (98), Braxton Mason (98), Lane Reardon (106), Isaac Jessen (113), Jordam Grimm (120), Ridge Lovett (126), AJ De La Rosa (132), Matt McLeod (138), Jason Burchell (145), Mathias De La Rosa (145), Wyatt Shelly (152), Tyler Morris (152), Braydon Huber (160), Coleton Kazmierczak (170) and Quin Bennett (220) advanced to the semis for Post Falls. The Trojans, who took 18 to state, have no wrestlers in the consolation rounds.

“There’s going to be some bad with the good, but going into the final day with all of them in the championship (bracket), it’s different,” Reardon said. “I just told them to stay focused and stay hungry. We don’t have it in the bag yet.”

Reardon added that surprises came from matches from Lane Reardon and Bennett.

“We didn’t know what to expect with Lane,” Pete Reardon said of his son, who pinned Ricardo Alvarado of Capital in 1:44 in the quarterfinals. “He’d never wrestled that kid and we didn’t know what was going to happen. It’s a little extra special because he’s my son and a freshman. Quin joined us late in the season and to make the semis was great. It’s cool for him to get to the semis and be a state placer.”

No wrestler from Coeur d’Alene, which qualified 10 to state, or Lake City, which qualified nine, advanced to the semifinals.

Jacob Engels (106), Hunter Schueller (120), Nolan Randles (126), Payton Keough (132), Mitchell Moffat (145) and Gabe Zanetti (220) must win today to advance to the placing rounds for Coeur d’Alene.

“It’s going to be a big round in the morning,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “Hunter wrestled really hard and lost a one-point match in the quarters. Payton got pinned, but was leading his match. We had some chances, but let them slip away. We’ll see if we can get them on the podium somehow.”

Lake City has three wrestlers — Seth Nutting (160), Cooper Brown (285) and Owen Hughes (285) — remaining in the consolation bracket.

4A: Alex Edelblute (106), Sam Edelblute (113), Riley Siegford (120), William Edelblute (126), Ryan Quimby (138), Larry Johnson (145) and Logan Kelley (160) advanced to the semifinals for Lakeland, which finished third last year and was second in 2016.

Johnson is bidding for his fourth state title; the Edelblute brothers are all trying to repeat as state champs.

3A: Brayden Herbert (98), Isaiah Evans (120), Caleb Miller (145) and Connor Yanez (182) advanced to the semis for Timberlake, which is ninth with 57 points. Sugar-Salem leads with 136 points.

2A: Sam Martin (113), Caden Hall (160) and Chad Dickerson (182) advanced to the semifinals for St. Maries, which is tied for sixth with Challis with 53 points. Ririe leads with 76 points.
