AVISTA: Look out below

| February 23, 2018 12:00 AM

Last November, two days before we cooked our Thanksgiving turkeys, Avista shareholders met and may have cooked our collective turkey. They voted to allow the Canadian firm Hydro One to purchase Avista.

So, why is this concerning? Well, in 2010, Hydro One was supplying electricity to their consumers for just over a nickel per kilowatt hour, but today they are charging more than 62 cents, an increase of more than 1,200 percent. It seems they got caught up in a green energy mandate.

Hopefully, we aren’t the strong swimmer that they are trying to climb on as they are drowning, but it doesn’t look good. Because I don’t know about you, but the idea of paying more than a $1,000 a month for my electricity doesn’t sit well with me.
