The National Merit Scholarship Program has named four students from Coeur d’Alene Public Schools as finalists for the scholarship competition this year. The program recognizes academically talented students from across the country.

The finalists are Bracken Curtis and Emily Fooe, from Coeur d’Alene High School, and Ashley Kaitz and Chris Vargas, from Lake City High School. Fooe, who graduated in three years, is enrolled at Barrett, the Honors College at Arizona State University.

The last time Coeur d’Alene Public Schools had four finalists in one year was 2011.

This year’s 7,500 finalists were selected from about 16,000 semifinalists. About half of the finalists will win a Merit Scholarship.
