RATHDRUM — James Carlson scored 21 of his game-high 29 points in the first half, leading the Lake City Timberwolves past the Lakeland Hawks 80-59 in a nonleague game at Hawk Court on Tuesday.

“They jumped out 11-0 and we were scrambling from behind the entire game,” Lakeland assistant coach Bill Ryan said. “We didn’t shoot the ball particularly well and were 3 of 12 in the first quarter. We just couldn’t get a shot to fall. Carlson did a great job for them tonight.”

Hunter Schaffer scored 17 points on 5 of 10 from the 3-point line, and Nic McCartin also had 17 points for Lake City (11-10), which travels to Post Falls to open the 5A Region 1 tournament on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Jalen Skalskiy had 12 points and six rebounds for Lakeland (11-7), which hosts Sandpoint on Thursday.
