An Idaho Senate panel introduced a bill Friday that would expand permitless concealed carry of guns to non-Idaho residents.

The bill would expand 2016 legislation that allowed Idaho residents 21 and older to concealed carry without a permit in city limits. Schools, jails and courthouses are exempt from the law.

Sen. Tony Potts, R-Idaho Falls, proposed the bill because he said out of state individuals concealed carrying when pulled over by the police.

“If you don’t have a permit for your state or the state of Idaho, that simple traffic violation turns into a weapons violation and it really can become a lot of headache for a law enforcement or that individual,” Potts told the Senate State Affairs Committee.

The bill must now clear a public hearing.
