Today's ghastly groaner

| February 8, 2018 12:00 AM

There once was a king who lived in an all-glass palace. He was informed by his minions that his enemy, a king in a neighboring empire was sending troops to steal his solid gold throne, of which he treasured above all his riches.

He ordered his minions to hoist his throne up by ropes to the ceiling of the throne room, out of reach of his enemies.

But as they were heaving the heavy throne upward, the ropes they were using broke and the throne fell and broke into several pieces, never to be mended.

As the king was weeping over the loss of his treasure, his adviser put his hand on the king’s shoulder and said: “I am so very sorry for your loss, your majesty, but you should have known a king who lives in a glass house should never stow thrones!”

— Mary Thrasher, Coeur d’Alene
