Cardinal women pick up key conference win at Columbia Basin

PASCO, Wash. — North Idaho College locked down Columbia Basin defensively in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Hawks 23-8 on the way to a 66-59 win in Northwest Athletic Conference play on Wednesday.

“They struggled to find some open looks and we really shut them down,” NIC coach Chris Carlson said. “The girls were realy determined and wanted to get it done tonight. They hung in there and kept battling.”

Freshman Sydney Hovde had 23 points and 11 rebounds for NIC (15-7, 6-4 NWAC), which hosts Treasure Valley on Saturday.

“She was a force,” said Carlson of Hovde. “We knew we had some size on them, but she came out and scored, and scored, and scored. She was just huge for us.”

Sabin Keo and Alexis Castro scored 16 points each for Columbia Basin (17-7, 8-3).

PASCO, Wash. — RayQuan Evans had 20 points and four rebounds to lead the Cardinals past the Hawks in a Northwest Athletic Conference game.

“Our first group came out and played well early on,” said NIC coach Corey Symons, whose team led 43-24 at halftime. “It was a nice, equal effort across the board. We got a good effort from everyone and were able to get some guys some confidence for the big games down the road.”

NIC (18-5, 8-2 NWAC) hosts Treasure Valley on Saturday.

Kason Blaire scored 12 points for Columbia Basin (3-20, 1-10), which was held to 19 of 63 from the field.
