Timberlake cruises to opening-round win

COEUR d’ALENE — McKeeley Tonkin scored 14 points and 11 players scored as the top-seeded Timberlake Tigers beat the fourth-seeded Priest River Spartans 75-20 in the first round of the 3A District 1 girls basketball tournament Monday at North Idaho College’s Rolly Williams Court.

Timberlake (18-3) will face third-seeded Kellogg (8-10) on Wednesday at 6:15 p.m. at NIC for the district title and a berth to next week’s state tournament.

Priest River (4-17) will face second-seeded Bonners Ferry (16-5) on Wednesday at 4:30 at NIC in a loser-out game.

Jasmine Martin led Priest River with nine points.

COEUR d’ALENE — Bonners Ferry beat Kellogg by 22 and 14 points during Intermountain League play. But the Wildcats outscored the Badgers 24-14 in the second half to pull the upset in their district opener.

Jaron Figueroa hit 10 of 12 free throws and scored a game-high 19 points for Kellogg (8-10), which plays top-seeded Timberlake (18-3) in the district title game Wednesday at 6:15 p.m. at NIC.

Kassy Skeen and Holly Ansley each scored 11 points for Bonners Ferry (16-5), which plays Priest River (4-17) in a loser-out game Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

GENESEE — The second-seeded Bulldogs (11-9) eliminated the third-seeded Maniacs (8-13) in the first round of the 2A District 1-2 tournament.

Grangeville will play top-seeded St. Maries (13-5) in a best-of-3 series for the district title. Game 1 is Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Genesee. Game 2 is Thursday, and Game 3, if necessary, is Saturday.

North Idaho Christian 59, Covenant Christian 42

COEUR d’ALENE — Royals standout Mary Schlader celebrated Senior Night in style, tallying 22 points, 17 rebounds, five assists and four blocked shots as North Idaho Christian rolled past the Warriors at Holy Family Catholic School.

Savannah Seeley scored 20 points for the Royals (17-9, 8-2 Mountain Christian League), Riley Anderson grabbed 10 rebounds and Hailey Parks had seven assists.

Covenant Christian’s Karis Peters sank eight 3-pointers and led all scorers with 26 points.

North Idaho Christian faces Center Christian School at 7:20 p.m. Friday at the Mountain Christian League tournament in Pullman.
